Using Cool Timer: Get More Done With Your Business
I thought I would share with you what I use everyday in some way or another to help me get things done more effectively and on time…
Here it is…(drum roll) COOL TIMER!
…and it’s FREE!
Is Google Eating Your Longtail Keywords?
“Mayday” as they are calling it… Around May 1st Google deployed an algorithm change that may effect you and your online business.
They can make around 400 of these changes every year. But this was one change that some webmasters really noticed and not at all in their favor. This sucks if you have all of your eggs in one basket!
What has happened here? In Google’s constant fight to deliver the most appropriate results and fight spam, such as from auto content generated sites, Google changed the algorithm, in my words – to favor deep linking vs multiple pages.
So Google is no longer as impressed with multiple pages, as it once was (like a big sites) UNLESS that page is deep linked. (By deep linked I mean backlinks go directly to it, not just the home page.)
It’s quite a logical idea. Because if a specific page on your site isn’t loved (bookmarked, backlinked, etc.) then presumably that particular page doesn’t have as much quality or value, as ones that does.
So people who put up endless pages of content that is not valued will not get the advantage of mass content, that they once did. Quality not quantity is what they are after.
The only problem is that some websites, like ecommerce web stores, or any site which has a “turnover” of pages, will also lose out big time. Just because customers will tend to bookmark the stores home page, or department, than several different product pages. Also many ecommerce stores probably rely on emails with links to direct product pages. But as these emails are not normally spidered by search engines (certainly not in each persons mail box, where as their own shared bookmarks like delicious, digg etc.) this page love is not visible for per page SERP.
And now Google will not appreciate a page or pages just because it exists, or is internally linked.
The depth of internal linking also plays a big part here, but then it always has. Naturally the most important pages are the most accessible and navigatable, with less hop links. “AKA” you keep your loved ones close by you.
The reality is that some PR6 “authority sites” webmasters have noticed up to an 80% reduction in traffic from organic searches, because they have lots of pages, but not ones which people deep link to, very often.
But as the logic stands, and Google have tested this and like the quality improvement. Note it is an algorithm change and not subject to human opinion. Basically the new SERP currency is not content, but backlinks to that content. But then, really it always was! wasn’t it? But now it’s more concrete.
Naturally BOTH factors are very important here. There’s little point of content with no links, and there’s little point of links to no content.
But the other impact will be on long tail keyword marketers and keyword rich domain name lovers. Yes the domain name SEO “trick” may come to an end sooner than expected. That is unless it is backed up by “loved” content.
The problem with long tail, is there isn’t much to talk about now is there!
If your site is so keyword specific that it is on “blue tennis shoes” then you can’t really talk about red tennis shoes, or even 12 inch tennis shoes. Well you can, and maybe you need to, but then the domain name trick and relevance may not be working in your favor at all. And we know from he past that Google likes relevancy and semantic relationships and logical organization.
So what should you be doing to avoid being hurt by these changes?
Well there’s probably no “PENALTY” for more content (that would be stupid) but there may not be much of an advantage, unless it is “loved” by search engines.
So if you want to get more organic traffic, get more love to each page that your visitors will value.
Now I can see a mass panic of worthless backlinks about to come like a tsunami. And Google will be expecting it! You Betcha, they will!
But as always, backlinks need to be relevant and from high quality relevant sources in order to count to serps. Again there should not be a penalty for more backlinks, but there may be almost ZERO advantage. Even a 1000 worthless backlinks will still be worthless.
So I think we can be fairly sure that Google has also, added more fine tuning to relevancy and quality of backlinks, as it always has.
